Setting Up Your Workspace

A good setup makes painting much more enjoyable. Here's all you need:

💧 A cup of water — for rinsing your brushes between colors. Change the water when it gets too dark.
🧻 Paper towels or a rag — for drying your brush after rinsing.
📋 A flat, stable surface — place your canvas on a table or hold it in your hand.
💡 Good lighting — natural light is best, but any bright light works.
🛡️ Protect your table — lay down newspaper or a plastic sheet if you're worried about spills.

Basic Brush Techniques

You only need 4 basic brush techniques to complete any of our beginner tutorials:

🖌️ Flat Stroke
Press the brush flat and drag it across the canvas. Used for painting backgrounds and large areas evenly.
👆 Dabbing
Press the brush tip straight down and lift. Used for painting leaves, flowers, and textured effects.
🌀 Curved Stroke
Sweep the brush in an arc. Used for painting waves, animal bodies, and rounded shapes.
✍️ Fine Line
Use the very tip of a fine brush with light pressure. Used for outlines, details, and thin branches.

Color Basics for Beginners

You don't need to know color theory to paint beautifully. Just remember these 3 simple rules:


Add Titanium White to any color to make it lighter and softer.

Add a tiny touch of Lamp Black to deepen and darken a color.

Mix fewer colors together — the more colors you mix, the muddier the result.

When in doubt, add white! Titanium White is your best friend as a beginner — it lightens any color and makes it easier to work with.
