How to clean paint brushes properly

Why Brush Care Matters

Your paint brushes are the most important tool in your kit. With proper care, a good set of brushes can last for years. Without it, they can become stiff, splayed, and unusable after just a few painting sessions.

The biggest enemy of brushes is dried acrylic paint. Once acrylic dries in the bristles, it's very difficult to remove and can permanently damage the brush shape. The good news? Keeping your brushes in great condition is simple — it just takes a few good habits.

Never let your brushes sit with paint on them — even for a few minutes! Acrylic dries fast and will harden in the bristles.

During Painting: Rinse Between Colors

Every time you switch to a new color, follow this simple routine:

Swirl in water
Dip the brush in your water cup and swirl it around to loosen the paint from the bristles.

Wipe on a paper towel
Gently wipe the bristles on a paper towel to remove the water and remaining paint. The brush should look clean before you dip into a new color.

Check the water
When your water turns very dark or murky, change it. Dirty water will contaminate your colors and make them look dull.

Don't soak your brushes in the water cup for long periods — water can loosen the glue that holds the bristles in place and damage the ferrule (the metal part).

After Painting: Deep Clean in 3 Steps

When you're done painting for the day, give your brushes a proper clean before putting them away:

Rinse under running water
Hold the brush under cool or lukewarm running water and rinse until the water runs clear. Avoid hot water — it can loosen the glue in the ferrule.

Gently massage the bristles
Use your fingers to gently work the bristles from the ferrule toward the tip, loosening any paint trapped near the base. This is the most important step — paint buildup at the base is what causes brushes to splay.

Reshape and lay flat to dry
Gently reshape the bristles with your fingers back to their original form. Lay the brush flat on a paper towel to dry — never stand it bristle-down in a cup while wet.

A small drop of hand soap or dish soap helps remove stubborn paint during the deep clean. Work it gently into the bristles, then rinse thoroughly.

What to Do If Paint Has Dried on the Brush

If you accidentally left paint to dry on a brush, don't throw it away just yet — there's still hope!

Soak the bristles in warm (not hot) water for 10–15 minutes to soften the dried paint. Then gently work the bristles with your fingers to loosen it. You can also add a small amount of hand soap or dish soap to help break down the paint.

For very stubborn dried paint, repeat the soaking process 2–3 times. Be patient and gentle — aggressive scrubbing can damage the bristles permanently.

If the paint has been dry for a long time and the brush is completely stiff, it may not be fully recoverable. This is why cleaning immediately after painting is so important!

How to Store Your Brushes

Proper storage keeps your brushes in perfect shape between painting sessions:

Bristles Up
Store dry brushes bristle-up in a cup or jar. This keeps the bristles straight and prevents bending.

Lay Flat
Lay clean, dry brushes flat in a drawer or brush roll. This is the safest way to store them long-term.

Bristles Down (Wet)
Never store wet brushes bristle-down. Water will run into the ferrule and loosen the glue.

Bent or Squished
Don't store brushes where the bristles are pressed against anything. Bent bristles are very hard to fix.

Signs Your Brush Needs Replacing

Even with perfect care, brushes eventually wear out. Here are the signs it's time for a new one:

🔴 Bristles are permanently splayed and won't return to their original shape even after cleaning.
🔴 Bristles are falling out frequently during painting.
🔴 The tip is frayed or split and can no longer make clean, precise strokes.
🔴 Paint is flaking off the handle or the ferrule is loose.
